Hey again, hope you guys had a great CNY! School was hectic, as usual, and am I glad today the weekends are back again. On Thursday we had some career profiling talk. It was kinda interesting, although I discovered that none of the future careers I like suit my main personality type (S); they were leaning more toward D I, my minor personality type. Anyways, today we had some kind of pep talk in class, when Ms T spoke about "letting you decide for yourselves and not others decide for you". Basically it was about "if you make some sacrifices now and work hard, you'll get to decide for your own life in the future". There was an interesting revelation about how even if you got 10A1s and no higher mother tongue for 2 bonus points, you couldn't get into the top JC in Singapore. Hmm I thought I heard the CL Dept say otherwise? They must be so results oriented that they thought telling some little lies wouldn't hurt.

Today's 'pep talk' really turned on the heat and brought the reality of Sec 4 life closer to me. The past few weeks were pretty smooth sailing and fun, but I really wonder when 'hell' will surface. Especially so when I heard that my dream JC's cutoff point had slipped from 7 points last year to 5 this year, I have this bad, nagging feeling that I should get up on my feet and start doing something now to ensure my grades next year. But how, and when should I start?

For CNY celebrations in school today, we had the same usual stuff: skits, songs and video. Lol for SS lesson we had nothing to do, so we rewatched a scam video of "Osama" speaking in English. "I am a scary person. Be very scared of me. Just wanted to say Boo!" Damn lame. -_-. The actor was making a lousy attempt at covering up his American accented English. I still prefer the subtitled Chaser version of the Osama video. "My beard is nice and luscious. And what's up with the fake subtitles? A jihad on Chaser!" Anyways, after school J, YC and I went for a game of badminton. It was a really good full - body workout. My skills kind of improved, although I won 0 matches compared to YC's 5 and J's 2. But it was sure better than when I was in Sec 2, when I found even hitting the shuttlecock difficult. :)

On a sidenote, there is a coughing epidemic in class. Practically everyone is sick. I saw a doctor twice this week, the second time because the pills that the first doctor gave me were useless. They were green in colour and had a triangle with a 'V' in it. (V for Viagra?) I guess it must be the air - conditioning, spreading all the bugs around. Hope it gets better...

Anyways, happy CNY to everyone! Gonna go off to sleep (I know it's real early) and rest my aching arms.

Just in case if you're a Sec 1 and haven't made up your mind regarding which CCA to choose, here are some posters for you to look at :)

You're actually looking at a piece of the future, because these posters will be put up for next year's CCA orientation. xD Anyways, if you have any further questions regarding CHSNPCC, leave a comment on this blog and I'll respond to them as quickly as possible.

On a sidenote, I'm looking forward to my new duo core CPU coming next Friday, built with just $400. Finally I don't have to contend with laggy Vista systems and reduced Internet speeds on this laptop. =D But can someone give me a 20 inch LCD screen too?

Not too long ago, I sat for the CL 'O' paper which was described as the 'fool - proof', 'definite distinction' paper that was so easy it was difficult to not do well in it. To give an evaluation of my performance that day, I would say that I couldn't have done it any better. My answers were thorough and comprehensive, and the essays I wrote were well pondered over and developed. In short, I put in lots of effort into making sure this paper would be good, and this effort was far more than I put for a standard school paper. However, I had conceded that if I didn't get my distinction, it would be due to my Oral/Listening Compre. I found my performance that day to be only satisfactory and not fantastic, with some stutters and non - fluent conversation. Therefore, when I received my results today, the 'negative' part of my hypothesis was proven correct. My final score was a B3, with a Merit for Oral. A B3 means having anything from 1 to 5 marks away from an A, which is very close, so I'm still feeling kind of sore. Especially when my whole level scored 83% distinctions and my class, 78%. This post is not going be one of those 'if only' rants, considering that I had given the best shot I could and probably would have had the same performance should I retake the paper.

Anyway, the good part about this is that the CL Dept is not forcing all those who scored Bs to drop HCL and forfeit their 2 bonus points. However, they are encouraging us to do so based on the fact that we could retake the CL paper and do better, thus having a more 'beautiful' certificate at the end of the year. That reasoning doesn't make sense to me though. Who cares about having a certificate of straight A1s, when at the end of the day it's only 6 subjects that matter in which college to go to? Furthermore, ultimately, it is not the 'O' Level cert that prospective employers will be looking at, but instead the 'A' Levels, IB, and uni certs. Thus, I'm deciding to continue with HCL, put a little more effort into it to secure a high pass (since a distinction is almost impossible, according to our CL teachers), and work doubly hard to secure A1s for:

English
English Lit
A Math
E Math
Biology
Combined Humanities

Oh well, life still goes on. =)

resolutions

  • Jan. 1st, 2009 at 4:16 PM
 My resolutions for this year:

1) Commit to going gym at least once a week (you're welcome to join me =D)
2) Spend less (or no) time on time - wasting activities (I've got my own definition of such activities)
3) Do well enough for my O levels to get into ACS (I)
4) Put in more commitment and effort in my religion.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! and HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY JOEY & ZHI YING xD

I was planning to write some reflective post about 2008 yesterday but since my day was so packed, I couldn't find time to squeeze in a blog post. So, since 2008 is gone, I shan't look back at the past but instead focus on the upcoming year ahead. 2008 was a great year where I discovered this fantastic bunch of people known as class 3-2 and had lots of fun with people in school and church. It was also a far from perfect year, fraught with disappointment from not being able to meet some of my goals and dreams. However, it was also packed with many great experiences, whether its bonding with the class, or going on the UK trip and meeting many new people. In this year ahead, I'm looking forward to being back with the class and having more great memories, and I also hope to keep my personal resolutions. =D

Bio essays completed! Finally all the 'anal' work is done, leaving behind the fun stuff like English essays. =D

Oh yeah, in response to why the CCIS picture looks 'cheena', it's because some of the dancers had to put on lots of makeup to fit the role they were in. You won't understand if you didn't watch the performance.

I'm getting addicted to the song 'Boston' by Augustana.

Boston - augustana</div>
It reminds me of those times when there is a person in your life whom you never really paid attention to, until when you start taking notice of her she leaves your life abruptly. So, yeah, enjoy. xD

christmasy week

  • Dec. 28th, 2008 at 8:27 PM
After weeks of practices and drilling, LYnC finally pulled off our CCIS performance on both Monday and Tuesday night at Plaza Singapura. What can I say? It couldn't be better than I expected. We had capacity crowds on both nights, and despite the light pre - performance rainfall on Tuesday, (which looked like snow when viewed from a certain angle) we managed to draw a bunch of really hyped up and appreciating people. Thanks everyone, for your support!

Band + Dancers!

The rest of Christmas was spent like any other year, visiting relatives and having dinner and going for church services. LYnC yesterday was quite different, because most all the older lyncers left to join Young Adults, leaving just 1/3 of us behind. It's weird not to have them around, and I hope I can get used to these changes.

Oh well, school's starting soon and I'm looking forward to being back with friends and class 4-2. I hope our new air - con classrooms don't disappoint! xD

Just came back from my duple holiday (you could call it triple if you wish). Went to Batam with family for 5 days, followed immediately with LYnC camp for 4 days, and finally went to Genting and Sunway Lagoon with my cousins for 4 days. Gosh everything was so superbly fun. You could do absolutely nothing at Batam except play tennis, bowling, join a local tour, do a spot of shopping, and of course eat. Got a pair of black Wrangler jeans and 2 shirts at 10 - ish sing dollars. Quite a huge bargain compared to prices back at home. On the last day we realized someone tried to charge his supper to our room. -_- $70 worth of rack of lamb and lots of good stuff. Luckily his signature on the bill was different, or the receptionist would not believe our side of the story, since we didn't have a receipt.

The Genting/Sunway Lagoon trip was really good cousin - bonding for us. In addition to the theme park rides, which we had gone on millions of times, we played lots of card games, including this super retarded one I learnt from LYnC camp: everyone picks a nickname, takes a face down deck of cards, and opens them, one at a time. Whenever there are 2 matching cards, we would have to call the other person's nickname, and the slower one gets all the cards. It sounds easy, until you try playing it, especially with the girls that scream hysterically when they get a match. I tried to sneak into the casinos with my relatives and older cousins, but to no avail. Always got thrown out by the cops. This was despite me trying to look older by putting on my jacket, messing up my hair and talking in a lower voice. Ended up looking more like a drunk, or so as my aunt claims.

The last 2 days spent at Sunway Lagoon was the best part of the trip. We stayed at the Sunway Resort Hotel and it was definitely a thousand notches above the shabby First World hotel at Genting. At least my room wasn't facing into my neighbour's room, had a nice toilet and bath, had phones that worked, had cable TV, and didn't make me wait 2 hours to check in. Those slides at the Sunway Lagoon theme park were real fun, especially the one that forms a U shape and makes you go down, up, and down again. It starts of real slow, and suddenly plunges all the way down without warning. My cousin CY was and me were like, "Hey, this slide damn slow leh" "Yeah, no kick" and then seconds later it's: "Woahhhhhhhhh!!!". Lol I guess I should never underestimate a slide. I managed to do more shopping on the last day, at this factory outlet below the hotel. It sells brands that you can't find in Singapore, such as Aeropostale, American Eagle and Northern Rock, in addition to the standard brands like Gap. Managed to get 2 shirts and a belt. Really satisfying.

Sorry for not blogging for so long. I've been really busy with camp and hours of fun - filled action in the world of GTA.

Anyways today I managed to complete half of my Chemistry assignments, which leaves me with:

1 Chemistry paper
Physics TYS
1 Physics paper
1 Physics worksheet
2 Bio worksheets
Math online assignments
Literature papers

Quite sizeable, but they should be able to complete pretty fast.

I'll leave you guys with the soundtrack of one of my favourite movies: S.W.A.T

Brings back lots of great memories =D

It's official: Barack Obama is the 44th President of the USA, with 338 electoral colege votes as opposed to McCain's 163 (270 are required to win). America has decided, by a landslide, that Obama is the man fit to run the country. For the first time in many years, America has made the right decision, and it's really inspiring to see a relative underdog rise up to the ranks to assume the top office in the world.

Well. this basically sums up everything?

And today was also the end of my O Level Chinese paper. It was very easy, so I guess everything should turn out just fine.

Two more days and I will be sitting for the first O level paper of my life. Surprisingly, things are still pretty relaxed here, since Chinese isn't really a subject you can study for. Oh well, I'll just give it my best shot and I shall not worry about the results.

I'm looking forward to the real holidays that will come in two days time. Movies, games, food, partying, camps and sleep. Bliss.

And although I'm not really into this genre of music, I think TobyMac is really an awesome artiste.

TobyMac - Lose My Soul
There isn't an official video, so ignore the lip synching and just enjoy the music. =D

school's out!

  • Oct. 23rd, 2008 at 7:58 PM
The last day of school ended with an excursion to the Omnimax theatre at the Science Center, to catch a documentary about the Grand Canyon. I thought it would be the same one I watched when I was 9, but this one had cheo - bus in it. Anyways I went to LW's home after that for some fun with GTA. xD

Just to sidetrack a bit, check this video out.

Obama's rally at Missouri with 100 000 people attending. Amazing cause Missouri is a red state (opposition) and this is it's largest gathering in history. Speaks volumes about how people would rather support a young, energetic guy that promises hope than an old, balding senior citizen that has rallies filled with hate and no solutions at all.

Although I'm not American, I sure hope Obama gets into the White House. America would screw up big time should McCain and that bimbo Palin to get the ticket. I mean, seriously, would you want this woman as Vice President?

And that's not Tina Fey acting as Palin.

midnight soccer

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 9:27 PM
I spent my last weekend facilitating this P6 Camp organized by my church. Originally I was kind of apprehensive of the outcome of the whole camp, but it turned out to be fun - filled and very successful indeed, and many friendships were forged.

The kids there were a great bunch of people, and it's impressive how considering they were from different churches, were able to bond so well with each other over those 4 days. I could really see them growing in maturity, from the successful 'Prodigal Son' act they pulled off despite the numerous argument - filled rehearsals; and in their Christian life, from how they earnestly worshipped and listened to lectures.

And the midnight soccer game we played on the last night was very fun. First time doing such stuff, and I sweated tremendously.

The kids picked up prank calling pretty well, although I didn't expect them to be so enthusiastic. They even turned to pranking random people with this line: "Eh! Ah B! I need backup! Got 20 men with parangs coming after me! *Screams* I'm gonna die!" After repeated 'Huhs' from the victim, they would hang up with "Sorry wrong number". Lame, I know, but it's really amusing watching them in the act. I just hope that they remembered not to overdo things and prank the cops or something.

P6 camp was a really great camp for me to facilitate for the first time. I think I want to help out for the next camp. =D

All my results are back and here they are:

Add Math - A1
SS + History - A1
Literature - A1
English - A2
Higher Chinese  - A2
Chemistry - A2
E Math - A2
Biology - B4
Physics - C5

At least I don't fit in the Asian stereotype that all Asians score straight As =D

And I noticed this very uncanny pattern in my Science scores.

In Term 3, my Sciences were ranked (from best to worst):
Biology
Physics
Chemistry.

In Term 4:
Chemistry
Biology
Physics

So Term 1 2009...
Physics
Chemistry
Biology?

its over!

Exams just ended today, and everything has been just great. =D

I went for a cut and wash today, first time doing it, and it's quite a nice experience. After cutting my hair, the stylist took this bottle filled with clear liquid and started spamming it on my hair. Spamming as in squeezing lots of shampoo on my hair. Then, he worked up a huge, foamy lather on my head and started massaging my hair over and over again, getting the shampoo deep into the roots, then washing everything off and cutting again. A little painful, but nevertheless a very rejuvenating experience.

the final fight

Lol today I sat for my E Math paper with no curved ruler, and a calculator that was on Radian mode. Yes, radian mode. I failed to notice that microscopic 'R' symbol at the top of the screen that was giving me so many problems for my trigonometry. However, my free - hand graph turned out quite okay after all.

It's Day 6 of exams and tomorrow at 9.45am my FYEs will officially end with the conclusion of my Literature paper. =D No matter what results I receive I'll just be glad that I gave my best shot and accept them. The perks associated with the term 'exams over' are just looming ahead. I've already lined up a list of new DVDs I wanna watch (In the wild, Across the universe, Ten Promises to my dog.. ) as well as the extra sleep I'll get, and to catch up on things I really want to do (unlike stuff like mugging).

By the way, I think this song is very beautiful:

To the cross I look, and to the cross I cling
Of it's suffering I do drink
Of it's work I do sing

For on it my Savior both bruised and crushed
Showed that God is love
And God is just

At the cross You beckon me
You draw me gently to my knees, and I am
Lost for words, so lost in love,
I’m sweetly broken, wholly surrendered

What a priceless gift, undeserved life
Have I been given
Through Christ crucified

You’ve called me out of death
You’ve called me into life
And I was under Your wrath
Now through the cross I’m reconciled

In awe of the cross I must confess
How wondrous Your redeeming love and
How great is Your faithfulness

update

  • Sep. 30th, 2008 at 6:35 PM
Just taking a short hiatus from revision to write:

English and Physics papers have passed, and although English was quite easy - peasy, I'm afraid I cannot say the same for Physics. The Physics paper was easier than the Mid - Years (where I was stumped after reading all the questions), but the relatively tricky paper gave me quite a number of careless errors. The Moments question had a very easy explanation for the answers, but I over - complicated manners and looked at it with quite a weird perspective (crossing the line into simultaneous equations lol). Oh well, it's over and on the whole, I'm quite satisfied with the results.

Oh by the way, if you were wondering, I wrote Invasion for my English essay.

PS: To the, erm, self declared 'happy' person that may be feeling emo after being taunted by the class: I don't think people would have any problems with your orientation, as long as you don't have an infatuation on a straight person and do lots of weird stuff to him. It freaks people out, you know? And, by the way, you should really consider appreciating the opposite sex. They're really great to be with, if you make the effort to know them better. And forgive me if I got the wrong idea about your orientation. 'Nuff said. =D

the final lap

  • Sep. 28th, 2008 at 9:26 PM
I'm squeezing in my final post before I break for my End Of Year exams, which means 10 no - TV and computer days, 60+ hours of intensive revision at the library, and thousands of TYS and revision paper questions. Poor trees. What never fails to amaze me is how the EOYs are here but there is none of the anxiety or panic many of us experienced at the mid - years. I'm not sure whether it's a good sign, but I keep having the nagging feeling that I should be looking at my books more often. Oh well.

Anyways, now I'm catching my last show before my 10 day 'fasting season', that is, the Singapore F1. It's been quite spectacular so far, with Nelson Piquet crashing his Renault into retirement early into the race, and Felipe Massa driving out of his pit before the fuel pipe was disengaged, injuring a pit crew. The Renault crash changed many of the original placings, thanks to the safety car, and Massa lost his pole position spot to be placed among the last few positions. RIght now, Fernando Alonso is leading with his Renault, and it's quite a remarkable feat, considering how his car bailed out with a fuel problem in the qualifiers that placed him in position 15. His disgruntlement was clearly portrayed in his body language, it's realy heartening to see how he fought back for his rightful first place.

Current standings are: Alonso (Renault), Rosberg (Williams - Toyota) and Hamilton (McLaren - Mercedes). It's anybody's game now, with 8 laps to go, and we just might see a very unlikely winner.
